Portland: Talk Shows and Donuts and Green Beans (Oh My!)

Here are some fun photos from our trip to Portland!  Special thanks to AM Northwest and Green Bean Books!  (Extra special thanks to Voodoo Donuts. Katie had this face on the whole time.)

Voodoo Donuts...and our favorite TV spot yet! AM NORTHWEST

The Straight-A Conspiracy takes on Portland!  Here's our appearance on AM Northwest.  We had a fantastic time helping to set the record straight about great grades, just in time for the new school year!  Watch us here.

We'll also be at Green Bean Books this afternoon for a book signing.  (And 100% at Voodoo Donuts in between.)  Stop by and say hi!

Fun Photos from Kansas City Live!

Here's our stint in the KC Live studios!  Followed by lots of ice cream from Glace...

Hunter finally got Katie to Kansas City...

After years of talking up the fountains and the barbecue, Hunter finally got Katie O to visit Kansas City!  (Of course, a little segment on KC Live! didn't hurt...)

We had a blast on the show, sharing insights and getting the students of KC prepped for a fantastic new school year.  Check it out here:

The SAC hits KTLA

Wait.....is that....THE WANTED???!!!!  Aaaahhhhhhh!!!!

Yes, believe it, folks.  This morning we shared a dressing room with British boy band The Wanted.  And we turned them all into total nerds.

Ok, maybe not.  But we did have fun doing a segment right before theirs on KTLA this morning!  Here's the first in our back-to-school series:

Welcome to Our Blog!

Hey there!  It’s nice to meet you. We’re Hunter Maats and Katie O’Brien. If you go to the “Meet the Authors” page, you can hear all about the more formal parts of who we are--we were classmates at Harvard, we ran an LA-based tutoring company for almost ten years, and we co-wrote The Straight-A Conspiracy: Your Secret Guide to Ending the Stress of School and Totally Ruling the World.

That’s all good, but that doesn’t give you much of a sense of what we’re like. For instance, did you know that almost every shirt Hunter owns is a green polo shirt? (Not even on purpose!) Or that he has had the best baklava in the whole world? (It comes from Anabtawi Sweets in Jordan.) Katie’s favorite movie of all time is Three Amigos, she was adopted by a small terrier named Beasley, and she once attended a Comic-Con dressed as Count Chocula. This is the kind of stuff you should know.

Most of all, we want to cultivate the return of curiosity. We want to build a whole world of people who meet strangers on the street and take the time to ask what they do for a living and how that works. People who are excited to expand their horizons and try new things, or read books or see movies in genres they’d normally not try. People who are constantly learning. We know that this shift is possible, now that science has shown how the brain works and what’s possible when it comes to learning. And we call the people who get on board with this life of constant learning “Generation Genius.” We want you to be a part of it.

To that end, here’s what you can expect:
  • Stuff we love, that we think curious learners everywhere should check out
  • Interviews with people we think are doing awesome things
  • Important info on how people learn and why people treat learning the way that they do
  • Occasional bits of weirdness (We can’t help ourselves.)

So explore, enjoy, and come back for more. And congrats on being one of the first members of Generation Genius!
